(CNN) —
The US Open is always a spectacle that draws millions of viewers to the ESPN family of networks each summer.
With the men’s title set to come down to the final day of play July 13, the excitement has begun to build in anticipation for the return to form of the Open Championship, as this tournament enters its final weekend.
While that enthusiasm is always infectious, it is the female contingent that has captured the imagination of sports fans on social media with their tennis skills and their fierce and passionate displays.
On Sunday, July 11, Serena Williams — the defending champion — won the final match of her career with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Ashleigh Barty to claim her 27th Grand Slam singles title in her 40th attempt.
With her victory, Williams becomes the second woman, and the second tennis champion, after Billie Jean King to win the Open singles title at least three times.
