Ezra Miller pleads not guilty to burglary charges in Vermont case, says he’s innocent
Ezra Miller pleaded not guilty to felony burglary charges Monday and was ordered to be released on bail.
The 24-year-old actor has been arrested after police said he broke into his apartment Sunday morning and then set a fire in the front yard, an hour after he allegedly entered the apartment.
Miller is charged with possession of a stolen property over $250, which is a felony. The actor’s attorney said Miller entered the apartment through an unlocked bathroom door and left through the bedroom window, according to the Burlington Free Press.
The actor’s arrest has sparked outrage in the town of Williston, which is north of the Vermont-Quebec border.
“We live in a community where we support one another, and I see this as another example of that,” Williston Town Administrator Steve Rector said.
“I wish these charges were not being brought,” he added.
“To not charge is to make a statement,” Rector said.
Authorities in Williston said they are not sure what happened.
“There is some evidence that he may have been a victim,” Williston Police Chief Scott Hales said. “We’re not saying that we suspect foul play. I don’t think he’s capable of committing a crime like that.”
A statement released Monday night by Miller’s attorney said he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and that he has been taking medication as well as visiting a psychologist.
He also said Miller is an innocent man and the charges are “completely false.”
“He has absolutely no intention of returning to the town,” Rector said.
“He will be out of jail very quickly,” he added. “I think the town of Williston is better off without him.”
Rector said he had no concerns about Miller and was willing to testify against him at a second hearing next week.
In a statement released by the actor’s attorney, Miller read a verse from the Bible that read: “The Lord is my strength and my song” and said
