Horror continues to dominate the fall box office with ‘Halloween Ends’ earning $32.5 million in three days, according to figures released Monday by Rentrak. The low-budget horror film earned more than any of the last four films to do so, the fourth of which was ‘The Conjuring.’
‘Halloween’ earned $31,721 in its first day of release, which was the most of any recent film not to do so. ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’ earned $19,159 the first day of release. ‘The Conjuring’ earned $8,917 in its first day of release, which was the second highest first day of any new release after ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon.’ The top 10 openings last year were as follows: ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon,’ $17.6 million; ‘Hallowe’en,’ $15.9 million; ‘The Conjuring,’ $3.4 million; ‘The Conjuring 2,’ $3.4 million; ‘Insidious,’ $1.3 million; ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,’ $1.2 million; ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2,’ $1.2 million; and ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1,’ $1.2 million.
With ‘Halloween’ opening in its fourth weekend, it will have earned $69.5 million in domestic gross so far and $138 million internationally. That puts it in third place behind both ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2,’ which has earned $152 million internationally and ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1,’ which has earned $131.7 million internationally.
While ‘The Conjuring’ got a much-needed boost by earning a massive $40 million in its second weekend, it is still holding well below ‘Insidious,’ which collected $103 million domestically and earned $175 million worldwide.
