It is unclear whether President Uhuru Kenyatta will attend the AU summit. However, AU Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said on Wednesday that she will welcome President Kenyatta to the African Union summit.

Kenyatta did not attend the summit earlier this week either.

Earlier this week, opposition leader Raila Odinga accused Kenya’s leaders of being “afraid to meet with us so as to hide behind the cloak of diplomacy.”

Odinga and his party won a narrow victory in last year’s polls, which were boycotted by the mainstream opposition parties. Odinga, who is from south of the country, says the victory was won on promises that former President Uhuru Kenyatta would run the country properly.

At the AU summit on Wednesday, Kenyan leaders defended the disputed result and said they would go ahead with the vote.
